What does it mean to exfoliate?
We are talking about removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Our body does this naturally by pushing dead cells up to the surface while new fresh cells are created (cell turnover). You know the term “baby soft” skin? Baby skin will renew itself every 14 days, teenagers roughly 27 days, adults range between 28 and 42 days. As you can see, the rate at which our skin renews itself slows down considerably as we age. Don’t fret! There are several methods to keep that cell turnover going through topical product application as well as professional tools and procedures.
It’s important to know there are two types of exfoliation: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical exfoliation uses motion to slough off dead skin- think scrubs, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, and cleansing brushes. Chemical exfoliation uses acids or enzymes that gently break down and dissolve the dead skin- think chemical peels, fruit acids and enzymes. You also have methods like hydrodermabrasion that combine both. While all are unique in their own way, the end result is going to be the same… smooth, firm, glowing skin! By removing the top layer of skin you are allowing your products to work more efficiently, increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen, and even out your skin’s tone and texture. It’s easy to get really excited about these results, but keep in mind with exfoliation that more isn’t always better. Over exfoliation can damage your skin’s barrier making you more susceptible to inflammation, irritation, dryness, peeling, and sensitivity to topical products. Leave the more intensive treatments to your skin care professional and take note on what they suggest to use at home between services.
When Emily and Danielle were formulating Sorella they saw a trend in skincare where a lot of people had compromised barriers that were often the result of homecare regimens that were far too aggressive. It was their intention to develop a line that helped to rebuild and support the skin’s outermost layer. In every Sorella product you will find effective, targeted ingredients that are paired with nourishing ingredients for the perfect balance.
