All About Antioxidants

Let’s take a quick physiology lesson together… Don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple and you won’t be tested at the end. Ready? Antioxidants are naturally occurring compounds whose job is to protect and heal your cells from damage. Molecules within cells can be compromised (loss of an electron) from external sources like UV exposure, cigarette smoke, radiation, pollution, and stress (oxidants). When a molecule loses an electron it becomes a free radical that goes in search of other electrons, damaging healthy cells in the process. The body naturally has a balance between free radicals and antioxidants which allows our body to perform basic functions like digestion or helping your immune system fight off bacteria. The problem occurs when we have an overabundance of free radicals which causes oxidative stress that can lead to cell and tissue damage by breaking down our precious collagen and elastin. This too is a natural occurrence that plays a role in how we age. In short, limiting our exposure to elements that cause free radical damage and protecting our body with extra antioxidants internally and externally can help us age gracefully. Keep in mind this is not something that happens overnight. It takes time to reverse damage to your cells and a daily regimen will be necessary for healing as well as protecting your skin from future damage. Consistency with your daily routine will ensure longer lasting results and better recovery after receiving more intensive treatments from your skincare professional.

Still with us? Now where can you find these in your skincare products? You won’t always find “antioxidant” listed as an ingredient but here are a few common ones you will find: vitamin C, vitamin E, Retinol (vitamin A), Coenzyme Q10, green tea, rosemary, calendula, Niacinamide, Resveratrol, and turmeric. Sorella uses a combination of antioxidants throughout the line to strengthen the skin’s barrier and decrease inflammation. You will find them in every portion of a routine – cleanser, toner, exfoliation, treatment serums, masks, moisturizers, eye and lip, and SPF.

Not all antioxidants are created equal. Vitamin C and vitamin A are two of the most coveted antioxidants in the skincare world because of their unique ability to stimulate and support the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen is what keeps our skin plump while elastin is what allows our skin to bounce back to its original shape. Over time our body starts to slow down production of collagen and elastin which leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin – aging as we know it. The good news is by applying topical antioxidants we can slow this process down. To get your daily dose of vitamin C check out our Pomegranate Acai Antioxidant Serum for use during the day and complement the benefits with an evening application of our All Night Elixir which contains a 1% pure retinol (vitamin A).
