Skin Recovery While you Sleep

We have some great news for you. You can help your skin in a big way by SLEEPING!!! You have probably heard the term “Beauty Sleep” and we are here to tell you it is real. The skin uses sleep hours to heal itself from the day’s damage. During the day our skin is in protect mode defending you against UV light and pollutants. At night your skin makes the switch into repair mode to recover from the stress of the day. We get a boost of melatonin and human growth hormone that doubles the rate of  skin renewal and natural production of antioxidants. Hormones are released that can lower our blood pressure, slow our breathing, and relax our muscles which then reduces inflammation in the body.  Guess what else goes up? Collagen production (looking at you fine lines). WOW! We’ve said this before, but we will say it again, our bodies are really AMAZING and we are just scratching the surface!

Our body temperature tends to rise slightly at night which makes our skin more receptive to topical products because it is more permeable. With that we can also experience water loss throughout the night so you want to give your skin the best support by getting into a great evening routine. We have come up with some basics for you to consider. Talk with your esthetician on ways to customize this evening routine for your specific needs.

  •  Double cleanse, exactly what it sounds like, cleanse and then cleanse again. The first cleanse removes all the impurities from the day, and the second cleanse works to treat the skin and clean the pores. You will be amazed at how much better a second cleanse makes your skin feel.  You can either use the same cleanser twice, or start with a cream cleanser like our Apricot Mango Cleansing Milk or Facial oil such as our Facial Nectar and finish with a gel cleanser.  Try our Orange you Jelly Cleanser .

  • A great evening moisturizer will lock in all that goodness. Night creams tend to be a little heavier than what you would wear during the day. You want to look for occlusive ingredients like waxes, butters, squalene, and petrolatum. Occlusives help decrease water loss throughout the night by hindering the evaporation of water from the skin. The beeswax in The Balm allows the skin to breath while locking in moisture. If you’re feeling extra dry you can incorporate a sleep mask like our Rehab Recovery Mask to give skin that extra boost.

You can rest easy knowing you are doing everything you can to enhance your body’s natural process.
