What is Exfoliation?
What Does It Mean to Exfoliate?
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin and it's one of the most powerful things you can do for your complexion. Your body already does this on its own: as new cells are generated deep within the skin, dead cells are pushed to the surface and shed. This is called cell turnover. Think of it as your skin's built-in renewal system.
Here's the catch: that system slows down significantly as we age. Baby skin renews itself every 14 days. Teen skin, about every 27. By adulthood, that cycle stretches to anywhere between 28 and 42 days, meaning dead cells linger longer, skin looks duller, and texture becomes uneven. Exfoliation is how you take back control.
Two Types. One Goal.
There are two categories of exfoliation, and knowing the difference matters.
Physical exfoliation uses mechanical action to slough off dead skin. Think scrubs, cleansing brushes, microdermabrasion, and dermaplaning. Chemical exfoliation uses acids or enzymes to dissolve the bonds holding dead cells to the surface. Think chemical peels, fruit acids, and enzymatic treatments. Some methods, like hydrodermabrasion, combine both.
The approach differs, but the outcome is the same: smoother, firmer, more radiant skin. Beyond the glow, consistent exfoliation allows your skincare products to penetrate more effectively, accelerates cell turnover, stimulates collagen production, and evens out tone and texture.
More Is Not More.
It's easy to get carried away with exfoliation, but overdoing it is one of the fastest ways to compromise your skin. An impaired skin barrier means inflammation, irritation, excessive dryness, and heightened sensitivity to the products you rely on. The most intensive treatments belong in the hands of a licensed skincare professional. Trust their guidance on what to use at home between services (find one using our Spa Locator).
The Sorella Difference
When our founders Emily and Danielle developed Sorella Apothecary, they were responding to a clear problem: over-exfoliated, barrier-damaged skin caused by overly aggressive at-home routines. Their answer wasn't just gentler formulas. It was a philosophy. Every Sorella product is built around a precise balance of efficacy and nourishment, pairing targeted active ingredients with barrier-supporting ones. The goal isn't just results. It's resilient, healthy skin that thrives long-term.
