Understanding the pH of skin & why it’s relevant in the products we use!
You have probably heard about toner, but why is it a must-have in your routine? Let’s take a quick trip back to science class. The pH (potential of Hydrogen) is measured on a scale from 0-14 or acidic to alkaline. To give you an idea, 7 is considered neutral, an example being pure distilled water. Whereas apple cider vinegar is around 2.5, or strongly acidic, and bleach is 11, putting it at the opposite end being more alkaline. So how does all of this apply to skincare, you might ask? We need to consider how products affect the pH and ensure our skin can maintain balance!
Our skin & the pH scale:
Our skins’ natural and happiest state is slightly acidic, 5-5.5 on the pH scale. When you experience acne, rosacea, or dry skin conditions, your barrier is likely compromised, and restoring the pH of the skin with your products is a great place to start repairing. Remember that DIY toner you tried making off of Pinterest using apple cider vinegar all over your face? It has a pH of 2-3, so you can imagine how stressed your skin is trying to bring itself back to its natural state.
Where does toner come into play?
Toner is typically applied after cleansing and will restore balance to the skin’s pH. We’re looking at you Dove; bar soap is between 6.8-7.9 pH making it more alkaline and harsh on our skin. The Sorella Apothecary cleansers are pH balanced to the skin, but the tap water you rinse with can average a pH of 6.5-8.5, pushing your skin to an alkaline state. When the skin is working hard to achieve a happy pH, serums cannot penetrate as effectively in the skin. Enter a toner.
Toners are multi-functional; the Sorella Apothecary Watermelon Mint Hydrating Mist is great for setting makeup or rehydrating the skin throughout the day. In comparison, our Spiced Wine Toner can combat acne and folliculitis (red bump around hair follicles typically after shaving) with its fermented pumpkin extract and lactic acid to restore moisture.
