How To Eliminate Breakouts

Keep it simple to avoid the pimple!

Have you ever asked your esthetician about their journey to glowing skin? It is not uncommon to hear that they too experienced acne, and was inspired to help others achieve clear skin. Before you panic over a breakout and make a DIY spot treatment, consider these tips for treating and preventing acne.

What causes a breakout:

A breakout occurs when the skin has excess sebum production (oil) combined with dead skin cells that plug the follicle and festers bacteria. If you can prevent this perfect storm from occurring, you can decrease the chance of a breakout. The ideal home care duo to combat acne is the Daily Greens Moisturizer, which balances sebum production paired with the Mint Poppy Seed Polish to help eliminate dead skin cell build-up.

Do NOT pick, pop or push:

Let’s chat about whiteheads; they have a thin film covering a pus-filled bump, sounds fun, right? Skincare nerds are on the edge of their seats waiting to dig their claws in, but wait! Please do not pop a whitehead, regardless of how tempting it may be. Instead, ice the spot to decrease inflammation and let your white blood cells heal the blemish naturally. Have you ever wondered why breakouts tend to happen close together? When you pop a whitehead, you are pushing impurities underneath the skin and infecting other pores. Once the damage is done, you have caused a wound that can take three months to heal and may scar.

Preventing a breakout:

Good hygiene is essential, especially when preventing acne; be sure to change your pillowcase and facial towel regularly. Another source of bacteria is our cell phones, considering wearing headphones while on the phone to avoid pressing your device against your face. Do not change your whole routine when a blemish occurs, be intentional, and patient with your skin.

Treating a breakout:

Simplify your routine; using harsh exfoliants can further compromise your skin, instead feed your skin with nourishment and hydration. We love multi-use products like Facial In A Bottle Serum. It will control oil, increase cellular turnover, and lighten the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots) leftover from a blemish. If you are on the go, consider the Sorella Clear Skin Mini’s Kit to keep your routine consistent. Committing to clear skin means not resorting to old products left at the bottom of your gym bag.

Simplifying your home care:

At night, take the time to double cleanse, start with Apricot Mango Cleansing Milk on dry skin to remove makeup and impurities. Follow up with a second cleanse using the Lychee Willow Bark Cleanser to provide antibacterial properties – excellent for tackling acne. Keep your skin moisturized with the Daily Greens Moisturizer, it balance sebum production and neutralize redness caused by a breakout. Be sure to gently exfoliate your skin with the Mint Poppy Seed Polish to help eliminate dead skin cell build-up and prevent bacteria from becoming trapped.

Be patient with your skin when treating a breakout and allow it to run its course. After a few adjustments, you can say goodbye to regular breakouts for good. Are you looking for a Sorella esthetician near you? Use our spa locator to find your skin’s new best friend!
