Dry Skin vs Dehydrated Skin

There is a common misconception with the terms dry and dehydrated when referring to your skin. Oftentimes these terms get used interchangeably, however, they are different and require unique approaches to how the skin is cared for. Dry skin is a “skin type” while dehydrated skin is a “skin condition”.

You are born with your skin type, it’s in your DNA and cannot be changed. Your skin type determines how much oil you produce, pore size, and even the texture of your skin. Skin types include normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. Each can be managed with your everyday skincare regimen. When choosing products your esthetician will consider your skin type first and foremost.

A skin condition refers to a happening or occurrence to your skin such as dehydration, premature aging, sun damage, acne/breakouts, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and pigmentation. Often a skin condition is caused by internal or external factors e.g. hydration levels, diet, exercise, environmental factors, stress, hormones, medication etc. Once the cause of the condition is determined, it can be treated and changed. Your esthetician will also consider this when choosing a regimen best suited for you.

If you have dry skin you will notice smaller pore size which leads to less natural oil production. Skin can often feel itchy and appear flakey. It will be important to incorporate products that nourish and protect the skin. Thick creamier products will be ideal for dry skin types. Apricot Mango Cleansing Milk will provide a nourishing cleanse without stripping away any precious oils. Main Squeeze Hydrating Serum will provide immediate hydration that you can lock in with Blueberry Milk Moisturizer during the day and The Balm at night. On days you are feeling extra dry you can add a facial oil like Facial Nectar and apply it over your moisturizer.

For dehydrated skin, you will want to narrow down the cause. Are you using any harsh exfoliants, or perhaps exfoliating too often resulting in a break down your skin’s natural barrier? Are you living in a harsh climate with temperature extremes either hot or cold? The great news is once you figure out the cause, you can get your skin back to its happy place pretty quickly. You may even find that once you start treating your skin type, that some of your skin concerns start to dissipate.

It can be a lot to figure out which is why we recommend talking to your esthetician and letting them guide you in a regimen that will address your skin type and concerns you are experiencing. Visit our spa locator here.
