How to Combat Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation

Dark spots, discoloration of the skin, or hyperpigmentation refers to any darkening of the skin. Patches of the skin may become darker in color, and it can be caused by several things including acne scars, too much sun exposure, hormones due to pregnancy or even eczema and psoriasis.

We have compiled a few tips to help you fight hyperpigmentation!

Tropical Topical SPF30 facial sunscreen

– Use sunscreen daily! This may seem obvious, but it’s still shocking how many people skip this step. Sunscreen is not only your #1 defense against sunspots, premature aging, and the elephant in the room… melanoma. Sorella Apothecary has an SPF for everyone. Tropical Topical Matte SPF 30, Quench & Protect SPF 30, or our newest addition, Tinted Dew Drops SPF 50 – 4 shades to choose from.

Lemon Lightening Product

– Use a lightening serum. Lightening serums such as our Lemon Lightening Serum contains ingredients such as arbutin, licorice root, and azelaic acid, all of which block tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for the formation of skin-darkening melanin. Lemon Lightening also contains hexylresorcinol which is a powerful ingredient that is known for its safe skin lightening abilities. One thing to note – lightening products must be kept up to prevent the skin darkening from returning!

– Don’t pick your skin! You’ve heard it before. We know those blemishes are tempting, but you must resist! Picking causes more damage to the skin and increases the chance of skin darkening or scarring.

Resurfacing Elixir reduces fine lines

– Boost Cell turnover. Use a retinoid in your regimen such as our Resurfacing Elixir to boost cell turnover. This will allow your skin brighteners to work more effectively.

– See your Sorella facialist and book a chemical peel! Depending on the severity of your hyperpigmentation, you may be able to see a dramatic difference after a series of chemical peels. We recommend planning for 3-6 visits to maximize results. Read all about peels here. To find a Sorella esthetician near you, click here.
